Independent School Entrance Papers
Welcome. You’re in the right place.
Independent School entrance is highly competitive, with up to 50 children applying per available place. The application and entrance process can be strenuous, and exam preparation can be daunting for both parent and child. Pass the Paper exists to help make that journey a little easier to manage.
We believe that practising well-structured, professionally prepared mock papers that mimic the style, content and process of the real thing, can dramatically improve both the academic performance and emotional wellbeing of your child.
We have teamed up with a network of UK Qualified Teachers to produce mock papers especially designed for the Independent exam circuit, with many of our papers designed by Independent School Examiners.
Our questions bank includes English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal & Spatial Reasoning. We provide a range of instant-download, printer-friendly mock exams; and online testing modules for ISEB, CEM and CAT4.
We hope you find what you’re looking for, if you have any questions just grab us in the chat we’ll be happy to help.
Best wishes,
The Pass the Paper Team

Queen Anne's School
Berkshire
The school uses the CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) CEM Select entrance tests, in combination with a separate Extended Writing paper.
CEM Select is a computer-based, multiple choice test, traditionally sat in either your target school or another suitable location. Whilst these tests can vary slightly from school to school, the core structure is a combination of Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics (which CEM refer to as Numerical Reasoning).
Candidates should prepare:
Verbal Reasoning, including code breaking, sequencing and common word puzzles.
Non-Verbal Reasoning, including shape analogies, spatial reasoning and series-based questions.
Maths, measuring a wide range of numerical competencies including numeracy, algebra, data management, fractions, ratios and number problems.
Extended Writing tasks can vary significantly in length and required content. However, as a guide it is best to prepare for both fiction/creative, and non-fiction/discursive and letter writing topics.
Our online CEM Select Testsinclude the best of both worlds:
Unlimited online access to our testing centre online CEM Select tests across all three modules
Printer-friendly papers with answer sheets are included as standard, to allow for parent/tutor consultation on any challenging areas or sticking points, away from the computer
Each CEM Select pack contains one of our Multiple Choice Maths, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers
Our Extended Writing papers provide a choice of two (or do both!) writing tasks, and include a marking guide written exclusively for Pass the Paper by an Independent School Examiner.

Entrance is via the traditional combination of English and Mathematics. All the papers are open answer (i.e. not multiple choice) and are split between English Comprehension, English Extended Writing and Maths & Numeracy.
Comprehension tasks are usually based on one or two passages. These passages are often classic texts, so it is important to practise on similar papers.
Extended Writing tasks can vary significantly in length and required content. However, as a guide it is best to prepare for both fiction/creative, and non-fiction/discursive and letter writing topics.
Maths papers cover a range of topics including arithmetic, numerical reasoning, numeracy, fractions, ratios, algebra, measurements, data management, number problems and monetary.
The most cost-effective solution is to purchase our English & Maths Standard Answers Packs. Each pack includes 3 mock papers, Comprehension, Extended Writing and Maths & Problem Solving, all of which are written exclusively for Independent School entrance exams and audited by UK qualified Teachers.
